Bayside Respite Care Association Inc currently offers the following support services -
Social & Community Participation and In-Home Support
This service supports people with disabilities aged 0 – 65 years in their own home or in the community. It operates from our BRCAI premises in Capalaba.
Applications for support can come direct from families themselves or through other service providers/agencies and are considered on a relative needs basis. We encourage families to become members of the organisation for a small annual membership fee.
The nature of the support provided by BRCAI is negotiated with each family and involves giving carers time-out from their caring role by supporting the person with a disability via community access, in-home and/or personal care. Typical activities include:
Community Access – transporting and accompanying clients to recreational and functional activities e.g. shopping, bowling, movies, swimming, personal/medical appointments, visits to parks and beaches. BRCAI has a HiAce wheelchair accessible Commuter Bus and travel with clients often occurs in employees’ private vehicles.
In Home – general care and recreation with/for the client in personal homes i.e. watching favourite TV programs, playing board games, cooking, personal programmes and minor housework (washing dishes, folding washing).
Personal Care – assistance with mealtimes, medications, toileting, bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living.
In general, support is provided in regular, one-to-one, scheduled sessions. Where appropriate clients will sometimes buddy up to share support.
The In-Home Service strives to meet the extra demand arising during the school holidays by providing holiday camps and activities.
The service also offers some group sessions and occasional support for crises and special events wherever possible.
Supported Independent Living (known as SIL)
The Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding is designed for people with high support needs, and the amount of funding support that you receive will depend on how much support you require to live independently. As always with NDIS funding, your application will only be accepted if your needs are deemed ‘reasonable and necessary’ – which means your goals and individual circumstances will be assessed to see whether SIL is the right choice for your plan. When the result is so heavily dependent on your specific case, the only way to find out for sure is to apply – or if you already have NDIS funding, you can talk to your support coordinator or plan manager.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a term that was created by the NDIS to describe their funding of supports which help people with disability to live more independently. SIL funding provides people with in-house support staff, enabling them to move out of home and increase independent living skills. If you receive SIL support, then you may live in a shared accommodation home with other people who have a disability, or you might live on your own. Your support workers will help with tasks like cooking, house cleaning, and personal care – enabling you to build skills and work towards greater independence. Supported Independent Living funding can be used for:
A Department of Housing home
Your own home
Shared accommodation
Specialist Disability Accommodation
A private rental
Short-Term Accommodation Short-term overnight accommodation for people with disabilities aged between 17 and 65 years-old, operating from our BRCAI House in Birkdale.
Bookings are taken every six months when clients and their families submit a ‘wish-list’ of their preferred dates. Every effort is made to accommodate bookings required for specific purposes and/or at short notice.
During Short-Term Accommodation clients are encouraged to maintain their normal routine, attending their usual day programs and activities. At other times there are opportunities for outings and where appropriate clients can be involved in the daily running of the house; cooking, making their beds, helping in the garden, feeding the chickens etc.
